Les Deux Alpes Ski Holidays

Some things become tradition because they deserve it. Skiing in the French Alps is for the British something that every skier must do, not only are they close by but they are renown for their excellent skiing and ápres ski culture.

Les Deux Alpes is one of the longest established and most historic of the French ski resorts, recently enjoying a huge facelift which has all but removed the last of the dated 70’s architecture that once dominated the resort.

Proud of its value for money approach and with good reason Les Deux Alpes is a resort that is easily accessed and allows skiing to be within the reaches of almost anyone; family friendly and filled with some great runs this is the resort that combines convenience with good honest common sense.

The resort boasts over 225kms of great piste with over 100 runs of varying difficulty, these are mainly categorised as easy (over half) but the intermediate runs are suitably challenging making for a varied resort. 51 lifts service the resort and although busy in the early morning these are adequate throughout the rest of the day. The longest run in Les Deux Alpes is a healthy 12kms and for those that want something a little different there is some excellent off piste skiing and over 45kms of cross country terrain.

Beginners are given a great opportunity in Les Deux Alpes to enjoy high altitude skiing on the  gentle slopes of the glacier, an experience that is quite special for a beginner whilst intermediate skiers can enjoy almost all of the skiing that the resort offers as only a few runs will be beyond the capabilities of most intermediates. Advanced skiers can take advantage of the off piste skiing or can head to one of the neighbouring resorts to enjoy the plethora of difficult runs throughout the region.

For something a little different to the skiing Les Deux Alpes has an excellent snowboard park, an outdoor swimming pool and an ice rink, skidoo rides are also widely available and for the less active there are less taxing activities including bowling and the cinema.

Eating out in Les Deux Alpes is an absolute pleasure, the wide choice and the tradition of great food and drink is still flourishing, whether you want to eat fondue, raclettes or hearty French fare you will not be disappointed and as with any French resort good wine is always on the menu  – with reasonable prices considering the expensive nature of most ski resorts.

The nightlife is lively but still friendly with everyone participating in and enjoying the party, the wide range of bars and clubs serve long into the night with the emphasis very much on fun.

Fitting in with the value for money approach of the resort Les Deux Alpes has plenty of affordable hotels in fact most of the towns hotels are less than two stars all adding to the affordability of the resort. There are several hotels that rate above the others but the competition amongst the budget hotels is so fierce that they are all generally of a higher standard than the stars suggest.

Self catering accommodation is also of a similar nature, it is plentiful and all seems to err on the side of budget pricing, all adding to the accessibility of this great resort.

The winter ski season runs from late November until mid/late April, affordable throughout the season Les Deux Alpes is popular from the start until the end of the ski season and as a glacier resort the high quality snow is almost guaranteed, although the main ski season is over by May the resort enjoys another burst of life during the peak of summer.

The glacier at Les Deux Alpes allows for skiing throughout the year and makes it one of the few  resorts where summer skiing is possible, the lifts are only open during the peak of summer (late June, July and August) and although the area is large the skiing itself is quite restricted mainly taking place during the mornings only.
