A striking feature of the first stretch of Playa Levante as you start the 2km walk from the old city to Rincn de Loix at the farthest point of the beach is the quantity of classy bars and cafs. Actually nothing like the tacky places you may be expecting. There are some fine Spanish eateries with superb sea perspectives like Restaurante Rias Baixas, a fine Galician restauarant serving up common seafood dishes from northwestern Spain as well as local beef specialities from that area. Over 28 routes which span city, suburb, coast and beyond, a faithful troop of 500 trams service the metropolis. Whether it be to study at the RMIT University, 18 km north of the city, or picnic in the parklands of Brighton East, 13km south-east, there is a tram for everyone.

One such route is the 96; from Brunswick East to St’ Kilda Beach.

Tram No.2121 follows this route many times a day. It is past its prime. An older model, short and stubby compared to the long, stream-line trams now in service.
It is autumn, and this evening is cold and cloudy. The driver sits down in his cab and engages the engine. Electricity flows from the live-cables above and soon No.2121 sets off from Blyth St, East Brunswick.

Passing family-bungalows and office-blocks, it trundles along thin, steel-rimmed grooves in the centre of a wide tree-lined street, stopping occasionally to pick up a resident.

South it journeys from Brunswick to North Fitzroy, one of the most affluent of inner-city suburbs. Its streets are quiet and picturesque. Victorian architecture and plain-Aussie pie-shops sit side by side. The tram slows, and stops.

A man climbs aboard. He wears a red and blue t-shirt with white insignia on the breast, which reads: AFL, or Australian Football League. He is a Demons fan, one of Melbourne’s local teams. AFL is a popular sport country-wide. It is similar to rugby league and grid-iron and played on a circular field. He must be on his way to the match tonight, as thousands of other Melbournians will.

Further south it travels into Carlton. The smells and sounds from the ‘Little Italy’ district on Lygon Street, with its restaurants and large Italian-Australian population, wash over the tram and through the open windows.

To the right the passengers notice magnificent, colonial buildings surrounded by sweeping lawns and tall Oaks and Elms. These are the Carlton Gardens, a World Heritage Site and home to the Melbourne Museum – the largest in the southern hemisphere.

The tram turns onto Spring Street, home to the grand Parliament House and state government. Then right onto Bourke Street, away from the suburbs and towards the CBD, a grid-structured hub of commerce, entertainment, retail and tourism.

West the tram travels, past the Bourke Street Mall of brightly-lit window displays and thronging consumers. Huge stores like David Jones and Myers stock brands like Burberry, Jimmy Choo and Calvin Klein. All are represented, as are 24-hour mini-marts and internet cafes. Victorians from across the state travel to the city for well-earned retail-therapy.

To the left on a wide boulevard is a crowd of clapping shoppers. In the centre of the furore is a man holding a microphone and bowing to the applause. This beat-boxer is one of the many street-performers who make their living outside the mall.A group of fashionable youngsters ring the bell to get off. They must be on their way to one of the many back-street bars or venues. Soon they will be partying in a mid-city courtyard, reclining against graffiti-strewn walls and smoking thin cigarettes, laughing into faux-fur collars pulled close against the mid-June chill.

Further on down Bourke Street, tall skyscrapers rise. They are the home to the Commonwealth and National banks, and the AMP Square among others.The tram sounds a warning clang, splitting a crowd of businessmen, uniform in cloth and desire to return home from a day in one of the city’s many offices.

Southern Cross station lies dead ahead. As the transport HQ for the city, trains and coaches from across the country arrive and leave in constant trade of travellers and tourists.The experienced riders of the 96 tighten their grip and splay their feet just before the tram lurches 90 degrees left, heading towards the southern suburbs.

A weary mother looks out her window as the tram crosses a bridge. She sees far along the shimmering stretch of the Yarra, the wide river which splits the city in two.
Dominating the south shore is the Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex. Fire spurts into the air from one of the shoreline plinths beneath the triple towers of hotels. The main centre boasts cinema, clubs, shops and a huge casino open 24 hours a day.

Another right, then a left, and the tram picks up speed along an enclosed train track as the vibrancy of the inner-city melts away; replaced with tall trees and wide highways of the south Melbourne suburbs.
The tram stops at Wright Street, then Middle Park, before arriving in St Kilda. It lurches right along Fitzroy Street; bars, pubs and eateries on one side, Victorian townhouses and blocks of art-deco flats on the other.

A traffic-light halts the tram. The sea lies just ahead. The driver tastes salt on his lips as the light changes to green, and the tram picks up pace on its final leg of the journey.A pier stretches out into the Port Philip Bay and to the left is the Hotel Esplanade, or the Espy to locals. Over its 130 year history the Hotel has seen the city grow and trends come and go. Tonight, live music thumps out as St’ Kilda’s large backpacker community try to get in.

“All change please. This is St Kilda Beach. End of the line.” The tram clears as passengers split, some bound for home, others walking toward their choice of coffee shop or Salsa bar.

The driver walks the length of the tram, gently nudging one sleepy passenger in dirty overalls. He returns to his booth, reaching up to change the destination on the front.

ST’ KILDA is replaced by BRUNSWICK EAST.

He sits down and pats the control desk.

“Time to get going again.”

2. Party with the locals on ‘First Friday’ nights

On the tattered fringes of downtown, hidden among the antique shops and vintage-clothing stores, is the city’s emerging 18b Arts District. Drive by it on any given weekday and you might not even notice pivotal landmarks like the Arts Factory. But on the first Friday night of each month, these rundown streets take on a carnival atmosphere as 10,000 art lovers, hipsters, indie musicians and hangers-on turn it into one giant block party.

3. Examine the legacy of the Cold War at the Atomic Testing Museum

During the atomic heyday of the 1950s, visitors downtown stared, mesmerised, as mushroom clouds rose from the desert behind Las Vegas. Over the next four decades, over 900 nuclear explosions were initiated at the Nevada Test Site, just 65 miles northwest of the city.

Multimedia exhibits at the Atomic Testing Museum focus on science, technology and the social history of the Atomic Age. There’s also a cool scientific- and retro-minded museum shop, where you can buy your very own A-bomb fallout shelter sign or biohazard T-shirt.

4. Shop for one-of-a-kind gambling souvenirs

The kitschy age of old-school casinos and the heyday of outrageous theme hotels may be drawing to a close as the Strip’s casino hotels trade their gaudy Egyptian gods and faux European landmarks for more chic – but ultimately boring – high-class luxury.

Fans of Old Vegas can still pick up pieces of these old-school hotels at fun, funky shops such as Gamblers General Store that collect vintage casino souvenirs, from authentic gaming chips to your very own slot machine.

5. Marvel at the avant-garde circus exploits of Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil’s circus shows rule the roost with the Strip’s longest-running spectacular (since 1993). Though founded in Québec, Cirque du Soleil seems tailor-made for Las Vegas, where spectacle is craved above all else. Whimsical multicoloured costumes, high-flying aerial acrobatics and giant-sized taiko drums add up to an electrifying atmosphere, and you can easily get caught up in the heart-pounding shows.

6. Refuel late-night at a retro hideaway Fireside Lounge

When it’s 4am and your feet hurt after shakin’ your booty all night long, where are you gonna go? Escape the other tourists at the Peppermill Casino’s 24hr Fireside Lounge. Hidden away on the North Strip, this pint-sized coffee shop with its candy-bright neon lights and faux flickering fireplaces is a beacon. The psychedelic decor and special-effects water fountains are as distracting as the cocktail waitress’s slinky dress.

7. Let it all hang out in downtown’s historic Glitter Gulch

When you’ve tired of the glitz of the Strip, ride the double-decker Deuce Bus downtown to Fremont St. There you’ll discover the city’s original hurly-burly casino row, nicknamed Glitter Gulch. This old-school gambling ghetto sprang up beside the railroad tracks back in 1905.

Although the downtown gambling halls aren’t glamorous like Vegas’ megaresorts, their proximity to one another is a real plus; you can easily stumble between half a dozen gaming joints here.

8. Make a pilgrimage to Liberace’s shrine of kitsch

Known as ‘Mr Showmanship’, the late, great entertainer Liberace has been honored by the creation of this outrageous museum, located off the Strip. While audiences enjoyed listening to Liberace’s exuberant keyboard artistry, they were also amazed and secretly amused by his outlandish style.

Time your visit to coincide with one of the free guided tours, during which no mention will be made of Liberace’s homosexuality or the more creepily bizarre rumors that he had his lover undergo plastic surgery in order to make him look more like Liberace himself.

9. Laze by the pool all day

Las Vegas’ pop culture of excess also applies to swimming pools. Bikini-clad goddesses proffer frozen grapes at Caesars Palace while the Golden Nugget’s waterslide shoots swimmers through a glass-enclosed shark tank.

The city’s most impressive (guests-only) pool complex at Mandalay Bay even has an artificial beach. Here, surfers can ride on 6ft-high artificial waves, rent a beachfront cabana or private villa to be treated like royalty for a day, or while away the hours gambling at the beachside casino.

Seeking Hawaiian lomilomi, Japanese shiatsu or a Thai massage? Or perhaps a volcanic-mud or banana-leaf body wrap and a coconut-crème exfoliation?
